On September 6, 2004, after an intensive 3-week cleanup operation, I opened a bar on Perhentian Besar (Big Island), an island just off the east coast of Malaysia.

The bar is located in a jungle setting, with a view over the crystal clear waters, in a perfect spot to watch the breathtaking sunsets.  For those who know the islands, the bar is just south of Abdul's, up a short flight of stairs.  It's almost completely hidden from sight when viewed from the water.

I discovered the place when I met the owner, who also operated another bar on Long Beach.  Although the place had remained unused for over 2 years, after a major clean-up exercise, I was ready to start trading, offering a full range of cocktails, premium spirits, wines and beer - something unheard of on the predominantly Muslim island.

The trees above the bar afforded a wealth of wildlife, and flying foxes, bats, tree shrews and dusky langurs (monkeys) made regular appearances.  I even stumbled across a number of snakes late at night.

Despite the amount of manual labour involved, it was a thoroughly enjoyable experiment, and even though I'd never run a bar before, written comments from regular visitors were extremely complimentary.
